What $99 is usually the price of

Across the industry, a $99 headline generally means one of four things:

• A minimum charge. It is the floor, not the fare. Anything bigger than one item is priced above it.
• One single item, curbside. Already outside, already at the curb, already disassembled. If the crew has to walk into the house it is a different job.
• A small volume tier. A specified fraction of the truck, with a jump to the next tier the moment you exceed it.
• A starting-at. Which is not a price at all, it is an advertisement.

None of that is dishonest by itself. It only becomes a problem when the first time you learn which of the four applies is with a truck idling in your driveway in Arlington and the crew saying a bigger number.

Four questions for any $99 ad in Jacksonville

Ask these before you book, over text so you have it in writing:

• Does that $99 include disposal, or is the landfill fee billed on top? Disposal is a real cost and someone is paying it.
• Does it include carrying it out, or does it have to be at the curb? This matters in Jacksonville because so much of the stock is single-story ranch with the junk in a detached garage, a backyard shed or a screened lanai - all of which are outside, but none of which are the curb.

• Home office breakdown in Mandarin. Standard desk $83, office chair $61, bookshelf $72. $83 + $61 + $72 = $216.
• Small lanai clear-out at the beaches. Patio table $89 plus four patio chairs at $30 each (4 × $30 = $120). $89 + $120 = $209.

None of those are $99 jobs, and no honest pricing model would make them $99 jobs. What you get instead is the number before the truck leaves, and the same number on the card afterwards.

Why a real number is worth more than a low headline

The value of published pricing is not that it is always the lowest. It is that you can plan around it. A Navy family on PCS orders with a hard house-clear date, a landlord with a turn between tenants in Neptune Beach, an executor clearing a house in Ortega before a closing - all of them need a number they can put in a budget, not a number they will find out about on the morning.

So price your pile on the item list, check it against the truck ladder, and book the window. If a $99 sign beats it for your specific load, take the $99. Just make sure you know what the $99 is for.
